Want to know how to use your time on Instagram as effectively as possible? How to get more followers, likes and attention for what you are passionate about?

Instagram is the largest and fastest growing visual content platform, largely replacing platforms like Facebook for the younger generation. For artists and creative professionals who work visually or create processes and results that can be made visible easily, Instagram is a great way of building a virtual portfolio. Uploading, filtering and publishing images is very easy and part of everyday life for over 500 million daily users.

You can also use Instagram to strategically expand your reach and get more attention for your creative work. The strategic possibilities are only explored by a small fraction of the Instagram user base and therefore still present opportunities to stand out.

In this workshop, we’ll make use of a variety of best practice examples to develop strategies for success and tactics for more attention on Instagram. We’ll look at how visual identity, hashtags and influencer marketing work, why „social“ is the more important but mostly neglected part of the term „social media“, what principles support viral potential of your content, how static and moving images work in the Instagram feed and in the Instagram stories, and how you can strategically plan and manage your posts and contacts and use Instagram to actively network and chase opportunities for jobs, projects and commissions – all with the goal of developing practical steps to continuously build your reach, get more attention for your creative passion, and proactively utilize the platform and opportunities beyond.

Methods Used

You will walk away from this workshop with your own individualized instagram strategy. After a theoretical introduction to the functions and features of the platform and the discussion of success stories, you will have the opportunity to revise your own instagram profiles and develop ideas for a visual identity, postings, hashtags and strategic building of contacts, reach and community. The individual approaches and ideas can be discussed and further improved in the group.

Requirements & Target Group

Artists, creatives and cultural producers with a smartphone, Instagram app and existing account (please bring your own devices and login data! Free WIFI will be available.)

The workshop is meant for people who already know and use Instagram and have at least a basic familiarity with the platform. The creation of new accounts or the explanation of basic functions – e.g. posting pictures, using the search function, writing comments, sending messages – are not part of this workshop.

Important: This is a live online course. To participate you will need a stable internet connection, headset for better sound quality and ideally a webcam so we can see each other. Also you will need an up to date version of the Chrome or Firefox browser on your computer and up to date Instagram app on your phone.
